Incantation is a long-standing staple in the US underground death metal scene. I bought the 'Onward to Golgotha' cassette back in 1992 and was immediately hooked by mix of doom, blasting and sick vocals over the raw production and all-around blasphemy. Fast forward to 2010, and not much has changed with the band's sound. A few albums have sounded a little more polished than others, and despite the revolving door of members (save the band's leader, John McEntree), the dark, complex riffs, catchy doom sections and satanic imagery never changed. Incantation is American Death Metal.

I missed most of the openers and HOD was a no-show, but Gravehill set it off, and the night didn't look back from there.

This was the most poorly attended show I've witnessed in New York, aside from last year's Jap-Ka and Corpremesis gigs at Lit. Beyond the usual lack of promotion (posting myspace e-flyers doesn't count), there were three other scheduled events to blame including The Faceless/Atheist tour, Tragedy, in Williamsburg, and Waking The Cadaver, in Greenpoint. I had a ticket to Atheist, but decided to make my way to Bedford Ave for my first visit to The Charleston. I don't think a single person paid for this show...it was me, a couple of friends and pretty much bands watching bands at one point. The first group, from North Carolina, were a bunch of radio-friendly rockers, and the poor guys didn't play in front of a single person. I rushed to arrive by eight o'clock, but the real bands didn't start playing until after ten, so I wound up drinking quite a few brown-bagged beers on a very crowded sidewalk outside of the venue.

A couple of things everyone should know before heading out to Nikon Theater at Jones Beach:

1) Commute time - from my place in Manhattan, it took 90 minutes to get to the venue, door-to-door...it was like a draining episode of Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.

2) Dress appropriately - I thought I would rock out with my sunblock out...dead wrong. It is very windy, so pack your favorite longsleeve. My boy actually ordered a coffee and went back for a hot chocolate. It cost him $16. Sucker.

3) Bring two for the road - believe it or not, but the entire place is dry. Yeah, even for a metal show. Luckily, you can drink (discreetly) on the LIRR and in the parking lot, so load up your favorite cooler. We did.

4) Bring money - like, a lot of money. My ticket was fucking $70. Eight dollars for a slice of pizza. Hoodies were $75. No lie. The place is a total ripoff, and shame on all the bands for selling $40 t-shirts during the recession (NYC inflation at its finest - the same shirts were $35 at the Camden show days earlier).

Overall, this show rocked in every sense of the word, the highlight being NIN's encore of 'Hurt'. Next time it would be great if the booking agency considered MSG...the show would definitely sell out and be much more accessible to a wider audience.

Unless you have a car, live nearby or get free tickets, Jones Beach Theater is not worth the hassle.

'To Gojira or not to Gojira' was the foremost question on my mind all day...I vacillated for most of the afternoon and finally decided at the last minute to get my ass over to Grammercy, and I'm so happy I made the move. The upshot: my camera wasn't totally charged, so I managed but one usable pic of our beloved thrashing Frenchmen. Regardless, this was a great show and all bands were at the top of their game. A packed basement tonite for a FREE Precious Metal event sponsored by Tones of Death, a metal ringtone website. I arrived midway through Ravage's set of 80s thrash-inspired power metal, which went over quite well with the crowd. They just signed to Metal Blade, so watch out for these guys. Brooklyn's Hull was a crushing force featuring three guitar players. Their new album, Sole Lord, drops later this month on The End Records. The main event this evening, in my mind, was the opportunity to see Philly's Orange and Black Attack, Rumpelstiltskin Grinder. I've been a huge fan since their debut, 'Buried in the Front Yard', the criminally overlooked and highly original neck snapper that put them at the top of the thrash revival pack. The 40 minute set was based largely on tracks from their latest release, 'Living for Death, Destroying the Rest', including 'Nothing Defeats the Skull', 'Thrash Brigade' and 'Brainwasher C. 1655'. Thankfully, they also played oldies 'Orange and Black Attack' and 'Grab a Shovel', so that totally made my night. These boys are NOT fucking around. Sloooooooooooooooow!

On a side note, Dan Nelson, the new singer for Anthrax, was supposed to DJ the party, but booth was empty the entire night, so WTF?
