Carcass + Suffocation + Necrophagist + 1349 + Aborted + Rotten Sound @ Nokia Theater Times Square 090608

My timing was a little off this evening and by the time I got to Nokia Center in Times Square, I'd already missed Rotten Sound's grind-a-licious set. What's worse, I missed the first few Aborted songs just trying to figure out how the hell to get downstairs by the stage once I was in the damn place.  This is a very big music venue by any standards; tonite it was sold out, and despite the summer's hurricane-inspired rain, everyone showed up.  Aside from the hardass d-bag running the Carcass booth, this turned out to be the reunion tour of the year.  The organizers pulled out all the stops and 1349,  Suffocation and Necrophagist were the perfect addition to an already killer bill.  And as another subtle sign that the US dollar isn't worth the paper it's printed on, t-shirts were $30 and hoodies were $60.  And you thought gas was expensive!

After the tour was over, guitarist Mike Amott made the following comments: "Highlights? Without lying I’d have say that every night was special, it was just that kind of tour for me – but the NYC show at the sold-out Nokia Theatre was exceptionally killer, and Ken Owen flew out for that one so the vibe was just incredible! That was the kind of night when you wish that the cameras were rolling.”

Hell jeah!

Norway's 1349

This scary looking gentleman's real job back in Olso is a bunny rabbit caretaker...

What a rockstar...

Necrophagist

The guitar player was amazing but his stuff was so difficult to play that he didn't do much moving around...

Gotta give it up to the drummer, he  was an animal behind the kit...

A little mini-pit broke out around me...

This was the crowd for Necrophagist - the place was slammed once Suffocation took the stage...

Local death metal pioneers Suffocation really got the place warmed up, playing a subset of the BB King's show in July. For some insane reason we did not get to hear 'Infecting The Crypts', but they did add a new one called Cerebral Haemorrage (I think), from their scheduled 2009 release, Blood Oath. Frank had the place cracking up as the lauded Wal-Mart as 'the only place where you can get an ax, chainsaw and garbage bags at 2am when your old lady won't quit yappin'.

Deranged frontman, Frank Mullen...

Love this shot...

Thanks guys...keep it brutal and see you at Wal-Mart!

It was the moment we were all waiting for.  The bumps, bruises, and $7 beers were totally worth it...Carcass had the place rottin' n' rollin'.  I was a little surprised that they didn't play much at all from the Necroticism: Descanting The Insalubrious album; I always thought that the 1991 release really put them out there as one of the top extreme metal bands.  Oh, and I was so trying to scream out 'Carbonized Eye Sockets' and 'Burnt To A Crisp', my two favs from the Reek Of Putrefaction debut, but I couldn't remember the titles for the life of me.  Many highlights, including 'No Love Lost', 'Keep On Rotting', 'Exhume To Consume', 'Inpropagation', 'Corporal Jigsore Quandry', 'Carnal Forge', 'This Mortal Coil', 'Heartwork', and a very special treat...Ken Owen.

Setting the stage for Carcass...

The crowd was going apeshit...

Original drummer Ken Owen had a brain haemorrage and wound up in a coma in 1999...his guest appearance this evening (for a drum solo)  was more than any long-time fan could have asked for.  Cheers, Ken.

Here are a few shots I was messing around with after the fact...
