Obituary + Unleashed + Carnifex @ BB Kings 100508

A wonderful treat for metal fans of New York as two old-school veterans visit BB Kings. Regarding Obituary, I never really understood when people referred to the music as 'Florida death metal', as if all Florida death metal had a specific trait that made it easily recognizable. Truth is, bands like Deicide, Morbid Angel, Death, Malevolent Creation, Atheist, Nocturnus, Acheron and Monstrosity all did their thing in the 90s but sounded nothing alike. And for the record, there are tons of Suffocation and Carcass clones out there, but nobody, absolutely nobody, sounds like Obituary. Not even close. Just sayin'...

Unleashed ripped through a 45 minute set that included 'Hammer Battalion', 'Where No Life Dwells', 'Death Metal Victory', 'Never Ending Hate', 'Your Children Will Burn', 'Midvinterblot' and 'Black Horizon', the new single.

Carnifex totally suck, so I'm not even gonna link to their myspace page. Generic, by-the-numbers metal bands with mandatory breakdowns in every song are really not my thing. The crowd agreed, with some in attendance holding up their middle fingers throughout the total yawner.

Unleashed

Warriors of New York...Thank you!

Obituary destroyed the place for a good 70 minutes and although the crowd's energy level seemed to wane a little towards the middle of the set, I think everyone made a good effort to go nucking futs for the last handful of tracks. Standout favorites included 'Slowly We Rot', 'Stand Alone', 'Chopped In Half', 'Find The Arise', a Celtic Frost cover that I'm ashamed I did not recognize, 'Insane', 'Turned Inside Out', 'By The Light', 'On The Floor', 'Second Chance', 'Evil Ways', 'Slow Death' and a new one. Unless I'm mistaken, I didn't hear anything from the World Demise album.

Florida's premier death metal outfit, Obituary

Rumor has it that Ralph Santonella joined Obituary because his religious beliefs weren't going over too well with Deicide fans, who threatened to kill him. Does anyone else find that hilarious?

Trevor Peres is pretty much self-taught, and now plays rhythm guitar for arguably one of the best and most influencial death metal bands anywhere, period.

Donald Tardy did a little drum solo, but impressive it was not...in fact, it sounded almost identical to the solo from the 'Frozen In Time' DVD, which I'd watched just a few days before...

The pit action behind me got fast and furious as the band showed signs of wrapping up...

Aw, c'mon fellas...just a couple more?!?
