Destruction + Krisiun + Mantic Ritual @ BB Kings 040708

Growing up in the 80s, my education in thrash centered around Slayer, Anthrax and D.R.I. (with a touch of Sacred Reich, Exodus and Sacrifice) rather than the equally influential European circuit, including Destruction, Kreator and Sodom (Coroner being the only exception).  To be sure, I double-checked my CD collection and sure enough, I could only find copies of 'Mad Butcher', 'Extreme Aggression', 'Coma of Souls' and 'Agent Orange' versus the complete discographies of their North American counterparts.  Nevertheless, I was still very pumped for this one considering that Destruction have been giving people whiplash for 20 plus years.  We were treated to classics such as 'Total Disaster', 'Tormentor', 'Cracked Brain', 'Death Trap', 'Life Without Sense', 'Release from Agony', 'Devolution', 'Urge', 'Curse the Gods', 'Nailed to the Cross' and 'Mad Butcher'.  Schmier added great color commentary throughout the nearly 90 minute set, describing Club Europa as "...a Polish discotheque...", and had some sagacious advice for the young bands in the audience "...keep playing...don't listen to your parents". Amen.

Krisiun brought out some serious die-hard fans tonite and the Brazilian three-piece simply pummeled us with a bulldozer of machine-gun drumming insanity.  I've listened to them mainly since 2006's 'AssassiNation', which I really enjoyed, so I can tell you for sure that they played 'Bloodcraft', 'Vicious Wrath', 'Refusal', and old-school crowd fav 'Murderer' as an encore.  A southern storm for sure!

I'd never heard of Mantic Ritual, but was happy to catch a solid set of neck snapping speed metal.  They played 'Black Tar Sin', 'Souls', 'Panic' and even pulled off a nice cover of Venom's 'Black Metal', much to the crowd's delight.  These guys are from Pittsburgh, and Ben was nice enough to chat with this Steeler fan after the show.  Debut album, 'Executioner', is out now.
